1. Word Order

2. Sentence Types

Identify each sentence as simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex.

3. FANBOYS Conjunctions

Combine each pair using a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). Add the comma in the right spot.

  1. Maria studied for two hours. She still felt nervous about the test.

  2. The forecast called for snow. The game was canceled.

  3. You may write your essay on Lincoln. You may write it on Washington.

4. Subordinate Conjunctions

Combine each pair using a subordinate conjunction (because, although, when, while, since, until, after, before, if, unless). Add the comma in the right spot.

  1. Traffic was heavy. We were running late.

  2. The principal made the announcement. The assembly went silent.

  3. You finish your homework. You may not use the car.

5. Appositives

Underline the appositive in each sentence.

  1. Mrs. Karwacki, the algebra teacher, posted the new schedule.

  2. Our quarterback, Jake, threw three touchdowns on Friday night.

  3. Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, freezes only partially in winter.

6. Commas and Semicolons

Insert commas and semicolons where they belong. Rewrite the sentence on the line below.
